2021 Kitchen Trends
While it may be hard to believe that 2020 is almost over, it is that exciting time of year to start looking at what the home trend predictions are for 2021! Today we wanted to share five of the top expected trends that relate to color and cabinetry – specifically in the kitchen.
Trend #1: Wood Finishes
Wood cabinets in particular took a backseat to the skyrocketing popularity of painted cabinets in recent years. But experts predict that 2021 will present a comeback for wood throughout the kitchen – specifically when it comes to the cabinets.
If you’re not quite ready to jump on the full-wood look, consider incorporating exposed wood shelves or a stained wood island with painted cabinets surrounding it. Wooden countertops are also an option for embracing the warmth that wood finishes provide. Whether you go a more natural route with a pale ash, or choose a rich stained option – don’t count wood out for 2021!
Trend #2: Dark, Dark, Dark
A common misconception is that dark colors make a room feel smaller. And while this can be true when used incorrectly, dark tones on the walls or cabinets can actually create a luxurious living environment that is ultimately warm and inviting.
Balance out the dark with lighter finishes, countertops, and fixtures. You can up the cozy factor by incorporating rustic wood elements and cohesive pops of a brighter color in the form of art, floral arrangements, and dishware. If diving fully off the dark deep end feels too intimidating, you could add a dark color to your base cabinets and keep the uppers light. Another option would be to choose a feature wall to highlight a dark hue and keep the surrounding areas lighter.
Trend #3: Pop of Color
2021 is discarding the rules around what color pairings “should” be. Expect to see plenty of examples of unexpected colors – with bold statements found on everything from the cabinets to the ceilings to the appliance colors. 2021 is expected to bring an exciting array of new kitchen companies and design firms that will allow you to incorporate unique pieces in your kitchen.
If you choose to implement a bold color statement, make sure it is a color everyone in your home loves. You won’t want to incur the expense of having cabinets repainted in a year after you’ve tired of your trendy tone. This is not to say that you shouldn’t take a risk on a bright shade – you’ll simply want to sit with it long enough to say confidently that you’ll love it just as much 5 years from now as you do on day one.
Trend #4: Minimal (or no) Cabinet Handles
This is said to be one of the major trends of 2021, as people continue to embrace a more streamlined aesthetic in the kitchen. Whether you gravitate towards the push-open and close cabinet door option or a subtle recessed handle, if you love a clean, modern look this is the trend for you.
A key thing to keep in mind with creating this seamless cabinet look is the finishing. If the cabinets are not finished on-site, it will be impossible to achieve the sleek look you’re going for. Make sure that your cabinet or cabinet finishing company is equipped not just to give you the handle design, but to also provide the necessary finish for a truly seamless look.
Trend #5: Painted Cabinets, Walls, and Ceilings
Paint is HUGE for 2021 – especially in the kitchen. Adding a feature ceiling is the latest trend to incorporate a quality painting job, and with color being a major factor in what’s to come with kitchen design – expect to see a wide variety of paint applications for both the cabinets and walls.
While laminate experienced popularity in the last 10 years, the longevity factor has proven to be less than ideal for many homeowners. And when the inevitable scratch or nick happens, painted surfaces are infinitely easier to repair than their laminate counterparts. Paint color options are truly limitless, and you can utilize paint for any aesthetic – from classic to mid century to ultra modern and more.
